![]() Imagine what epic 3rd person action set-pieces could be created and streamed in in real time on the level of hardware we have now. Look at what Insomniac has done with Rachet and Clank and Spider-Man 2 in terms of loading in environments and elements with PS5's super speedy SSD. I guess what I'm saying is where is Platinum Games or Capcom when you need them? I feel like the genre could be raised to insane heights with the power of these next generation consoles. Then there is Rise of the Ronin, which does look pretty damn cool from what little we've seen and I do love me some Team Ninja but the game is also open-world or semi open-world, not so much a linear one. I am aware of some of the games releasing in this genre such as Stellar Blade, Phantom Blade Zero, and Lost Soul Aside but those three seem somewhat far off and also are from relatively unknown developers so who knows if the quality/duration of the game will be sufficient to satisfy. I think part of it as well is that some of the recently released games in this genre just fell short for me, such as Bayonetta 3 or Wanted: Dead which was fun but the combat was more flashy visually and the luster wore off quickly after I beat the game. And don't get me wrong I do love me some Souls games as well but that really is a different genre to me that has more grounded combat, though Sekiro was a great diversion from that. I think the last one I played that I had a great time with was Astral Chain (though this one does lean a bit more heavily on the RPG elements). ![]() I'm in my late thirties now so I understand that a whole new generation of gamers are with us now and that trends change all the time, but I miss looking forward to games like this. Over the years I've felt that this genre has been quite stagnant with little to no releases I'm kind of left wondering, why is that exactly? I do feel like at least we do get these games from time to time but the releases seem very spread out and it doesn't feel like how it was during the Xbox 360/PS3 era. I would say if I had to pick my 3 favorite games in this genre it would be: One of my favorite genres in video games is the 3rd person, character action genre otherwise known as "action adventure" or "hack 'n slash." Specifically games that forgo RPG elements for more of a basic upgrade system and also usually have really amazing setpieces and player expression with combat.Įxamples of games I consider to be in this genre are: Devil May Cry (series as a whole), Bayonetta 1-3, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Ninja Gaiden 1-3, Wanted: Dead, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Anarchy Reigns, No More Heroes 1-3 ![]()
